Ayurveda For Stress Relief By Juliet Cohen Stress is a feeling that's created when we react to particular events. Stress is the internal distribution of force per unit area that balances and reacts to external loads applied to a body. Stress is not always a synonym for distress. The individual responds to stress in ways that affect the individual as well as their environment. Everyone is familiar with stress. We experience it in varying forms and degrees every day. In small doses, stress can actually be beneficial to us. It is only when the stress becomes too great, affecting our physical or mental functioning, that it becomes a problem. Increased stress increases productivity – up to a point, after which things rapidly deteriorate, and that level also differs for each of us. It’s much like the stress or tension on a violin string. Situations like a steep roller coaster ride that cause fear and anxiety for some can prove highly pleasurable for others. True stress is an alternative definition in which the initial area is replaced by the current area. In engineering applications, the initial area is always known, and so calculations using nominal stress are generally easier. Winning a race or election may be more stressful than losing but this is good stress. When the stress tensor is needed to fully describe the state of stress in a body, it is useful to break the concept up into smaller parts that have physical significance.
Stress is nothing but uncomfortable state of mind. It is the state of mental or emotional strain. Ayurveda, the "Science of Life. Ayurveda believes this to be Maanas Dosha (mental disorder). There are several single herbs and compounds that give relieves in stress. According to ayurveda, human body is made of three doshas—vata, pitta and kapha, which are also present in the nature. These three doshas are in constant interaction with each other inside human body and, also outside of it, with the three doshas of nature. The three doshas govern all metabolic activities. Relieve Your Stress With Meditation Meditation has been used for centuries as a way for people to reflect, relax and connect with their inner selves, but it is not some mysterious ancient art that requires years of study. At some time in your life, you have probably experienced a meditative state, a feeling of peace and serenity, simply by walking through the woods, or enjoying a beautiful piece of music. With just a little practice, you can achieve that peaceful state whenever you wish, and feel refreshed and ready to take on life's challenges. Try to Meditate Daily Pick a time that works for you. If you have children, wait until they are in school or napping. Many people meditate in the morning as a relaxing way to start the day, while others like to meditate before bed. The time of day is not important, nor is the amount of time you spend meditating. Twenty to thirty minutes is good, but even if you can only spare 5 or 10 minutes you will still benefit from it. Meditation Basics Choose a quiet place with few distractions. If you like, you can light incense or a scented candle, but it isn't necessary. Some people find it helpful to listen to relaxing music or nature sounds while meditating; others prefer complete silence. You can sit cross-legged on the floor, or sit in a chair with your back supported. The important thing is that you are comfortable. Place one hand on each thigh, or cup your right hand under your left in your lap. You do not have to stay still to meditate! It's ok to move or scratch an itch! Don't feel that you have to shut out the world completely to get the benefits of meditation. If the phone rings, or there is some other brief interruption, just take care of it, then go back to meditating.
Breathing Keep your spine straight, but not stiff, as this allows you to breathe deeply. Breathing deeply helps you to relax and concentrate because more oxygen is getting into the bloodstream. And deep breathing actually slows your heart rate. When you have found a comfortable position, begin focusing on breathing deeply. Follow each breath as it enters your nose, goes down into your lungs, and then out your nose again. Feel it on your upper lip as you exhale. Breathe in to the count of 4, and exhale to the count of 4. Feel the muscles in your body beginning to relax. Don't be concerned if you find it difficult to relax in the beginning. Trying too hard to relax can be stressful in itself! You may find yourself thinking about work, or all the things you need to take care of that day. If so, just acknowledge the thoughts that come into your head, but then let them go and focus again on your breathing. You may also want to start with shorter periods of meditation and work up to longer sessions. Visualize Visualization is a great tool to help you relax. Imagine yourself in a place that you find peaceful, for example, the beach. Think about the sounds you would hear there: the cries of the seagulls, and the sound of the waves on the shore. Imagine how the sun feels on your skin, and the smell of the salt air. You might choose to visualize being in the woods, or in the mountains. Whatever you choose, imagine every detail as if you are actually there. Meditation is only one of the ways to reduce the stress in our lives. Eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep and exercise are also very important. Take a look at your lifestyle and decide whether you need to make other changes, but try meditation, too. It is a great way to relax and reduce the negative effects of stress, and you will feel the difference immediately.

Today stress is likely to be described as mental rather than physical as our lives have become more complex nut nonetheless the body react to stress in three distinct biological phases.
The Alarm reaction to stress.
The first reaction is the body realizes that something is wrong and it has to make a decision, usually known as the flight or flight response. This reaction would go back to the very earliest of men, when faced with danger they had two choices either face it and fight or run away. This creates an adrenalin rush so that you can deal with the pressure.
Resistance to Physical Stress.
Unfortunately the human body is not capable or maintaining that level of stress for long and it resists the changes that the body is going through such as the rush of adrenalin.
Exhaustion
If the body is exposed to too high a level of stress for sufficient time it changes by aging in real terms it begins to burn out.
Good stress if it does not go on for to long can energize us and motivate us to succeed. It increases the awareness of your physical surroundings as the body takes stock of the immediate challenges. Hans Selye definition of stress was
"Stress is the human response to changes that occur as a part of daily living.".
Eventually Selye joined up the dots in his research and applied the principals to humans and he found that although we all react to different things which stress us we all an identical physical reaction. It ages us and ultimately he proved a direct relationship between excessive levels of stress and cancer and coronary heart disease. Unfortunately the physical results of too much stress do not manifest themselves immediately even though the extra hormones pumped out leave you feeling physically drained.
Stress management is self explanatory. It is the effects of reducing the physical effects of the body of bad stress. There are various techniques to manage stress such as exercise and relaxation. However they both come down to the same thing getting the levels of mental and physical stress we face more or less equal. Relaxation means total relaxation, for instance watching the television is not relaxing, though we use it as such, the brain is still energized and engaged. Sleep is important as it allows the body to recuperate. Deep breathing and meditation can also relax the body and reduce stress.
That explains stress but how does that affect the immune system specifically. Stress has the same affect on the immune system as it does on the rest of the body. The act of a massive input of adrenalin allows the immune system to take action it effectively prepares our immune system to deal with infections or problems, arising from burns, cuts, and other injures. It prepares the body to heal itself.
However the immune system cannot cope with elevated levels of stress anymore than the body can, in all cases long term stress has a negative affect on the immune system as across the board it does not work as well. Specifically if you are elderly or your immune system is already under threat then the stress can cause the immune system to almost stop functioning entirely.

To combat Mommy stress there are some simply strategies that we need to put into place. The first one is to be kind to yourself. Many Mommy Stress sufferers are guilty of putting themselves last on the list of things to do and still feel guilty at the end of each day for not being perfect. The easiest way to turn this around is to be kind to yourself. Be kind with your internal dialog; congratulate yourself on your achievements no matter how big or small. Be the first one to praise yourself for the wonderful job you are doing keeping the family functioning. Most importantly make time for yourself. A Mommy who allows herself time each day to pamper, even if it is only for the smallest amount of time, is going to be a much less stressed Mommy.
Another great strategy is to make sure you leave the house at least once a day. A walk in the park with the stroller or even just around the block can do wonders for putting things into perspective and reducing your Mommy Stress. Remember the things you used to enjoy before you became a victim of Mommy Stress and schedule at least one of those activities into your week, every week. Breathe. This may sound a little silly at first but without your health how are you going to keep the family running? It is a known fact that when we are stressed we take shallower breaths and this can contribute to the Mommy Stress. So relax and try to take slower deeper breaths, especially when things are becoming overwhelming.
With this age of digital technology and fast communication, don't forget to pick up the phone and connect with your friends. By all means keep up to date with instant messages and e-mails but a good friendly conversation with one fellow Mommy Stress sufferers, your friends will help to unburden you as you laugh off the week's worth of diaper disaster stories and meal flops. And just remember, if you are going to laugh about it later, why not laugh now.

These humorous steps, if you follow can provide you with a peaceful and calm mind. These are just a guide that you should follow with utmost sincerity.
First, try to change your attitude to a humorous one, i.e. speaking of small and healthy jokes among your friends while at work or at home is found to be very productive. This not only relieves you but also takes off your mind from your tensions for small moments.
One of the other methods that you can try is, try to find happiness in even small parts of your daily life. Now this may look easy and like wasting your time on small things, but when you follow this and find happiness in even small things, half of your time will be spent on finding these moments and the rest on laughing on them so that stress won't have any time to enter your mind.
The next step is now a days getting popular which is, to laugh every morning you get up, may it be for no reason. Just laugh your heart out as loudly as you can. No need for me to tell how easily it brings humor to your life but to just site an example I am sure reading the above lines and assuming yourself in that situation must have given you a smile.
What you can also do is follow this: "A man is known by the company he keeps". What I mean to say is you should spend more of your time with people who like to bring humor in their talks so that your character will also be shaped accordingly.
Now all the above are some of the important points that you can do to relieve yourself of stress but the most important thing is to laugh.

Take a deep breath There are a lot of people who do not realize how important proper breathing is. Breathing is one of the most important instant stress relief techniques. Only few people know that without thinking how we breath we can't deal with stress properly. When we are stressed, we take shallow breaths and they just increase the feeling of tension.
So as you already know, it is good to think about breathing. If you get stressed next time, take a minute for yourself and try to concentrate. Take few deep breaths. Remember to inhale through the nose for about four seconds, hold it for two seconds and exhale for six seconds.
While breathing, try to do it so deeply that you will be able to notice your abdomen rise and falls when you exhale. It is called yoga breathing technique. And you can use it to relax any time you want.
Whenever you feel anxiety or tension, take from five to ten of deep breaths. You will see how stress disappears.
Talk about it If you have the opportunity to talk to somebody about how you feel- do it! When you are stressed and there's someone near you who you can tell what is worrying you, that might be a great stress relief technique for you. You can also write a diary or even an e-mail if you can't talk to any person. This technique is good for woman, who are more likely to have a will to talk about emotions and problems they are facing.
Go for a walk Going for a walk or doing some other activity or exercise is another brilliant technique which helps in reducing stress. Walking is effective because it takes you away from the problems you are facing in your work place or in any other place. Moreover walking makes you feel more alert because the blood flowing increases your energy level. It also reduces stress because walking and relaxing makes muscle tension smaller. After this you will be able to cope with your problems more effective.
Other ideas helpful in reducing stress instantly
* First of all don't be shy to express your emotions. If it happens to you to feel a need to cry, scream or even throw something you can try to do it as long as you know that you are not in a public place and that what you do will not bring attention of other people. If you are able to express these feelings you will feel how tension decreases. * If you have the opportunity to be in a calm place for a few minutes you can try out to visualize calm. It is a kind of meditation. Sit down, take few deep breaths and imagine "calm" or "peace" in your mind. Instead of this you can also think about favourite place which makes you happy. Afterwards you will feel calm and relaxed. * If you like nice smell you can try to use it to get rid of stress. Smell something sweet like aromatic oil which you like or which you know to be calming. You can try to use spicy apple or lavender for example. Install a source of good smell in your work place and at home. It will make you feel more happy. * Naturopathy. There are various therapeutic methods of Naturopathy which minimize the effects of stress such as anxiety, depression, hypertension and lethargy. Natural elements such as aromas of plants, herbs or flowers and colours are used in treating stress related disorders. * If you want to get rid of stress quickly and for good you have to notice what is the source of stress and how to deal with this source. When you have already found out what makes you feel stressed, you can use some instant stress relief techniques.
Here are instant stress relief tips which you can use when you are at work:
* First of all, breath deep and often. It has been proven by scientists that breathing is able to relax your whole body. Take slow deeps. About 7 or 10. You can repeat this action few times until you notice that your heart rate decreases and your body stops sweating too much. * Another good idea when dealing with stress is to block stressful thoughts. Don't sit all day thinking about bad things that may happen. It doesn't help you. Instead of helping, it increases pressure on the mind. So don't be pessimistic. Forget about bad things which rarely ever happen. * Sleep more. Try to get healthy sleep each night. Nowadays people suffer from lack of sleep, no exercise and bad diet. All these factors are combined with being stressed at work or at home and as a result we can become depressed. So all you have to do is to stop thinking about problems when it is time to sleep and give your mind a chance to relax. * It is essential to know what makes you most stressed. It might be for example work presentation or important meeting which makes your heart rate increasing. Try to discover stressful spots and make a list of them. When you know what bothers you the most, you will be able to cope with stress faster and better. Think how you can prevent stressful situations or reduce them. For example if you don't like to speak in public, you can try to exercise in front of the mirror for few days before the speech.

When it comes to scents, as a general rule we don't usually link aromatherapy to stress relief. But the truth is that it can have huge benefits for your overall health and well-being.
Aromatherapy can be beneficial for anyone. Not only does it produce pleasing smells, but it also does wonders to help you relax. After a long day, you may feel stressed and uptight.
As a result, your muscles tense up; you can feel your entire body fill with stress, which can cause your blood pressure to rise. This is the body's natural reaction to stress. Stress caused by a long day or a life-changing event can pour into every aspect of your life.
Because of this you feel tired, overwhelmed. This is an all too familiar scenario for most people, regardless of where you live.
Our lives are evolving constantly. We go to work, and are faced with unending responsibilities and tight deadlines. And of course, there is often no relief for the feelings of stress that course through your body or for the concerns that flood your mind.
Therefore, if you're looking for a reason to lose yourself and reduce stress simultaneously, consider a few simple techniques that involve aromatherapy.
Pour yourself a bubble bath. This is one gift you can give yourself to help lift your stress and give you quiet time for yourself. Pick up some bubble bath solution at the shop. Some popular scents include vanilla or strawberry. Once you pour your bath, immerse yourself in the water. In addition to helping you relax, the warm water will permeate into your pores and surround you in a warm and comforting sensation.
If it helps, light some scented candles, and dim or turn off the lights. Sit in the glow of candles, as the aromas float to your nostrils.
As a stress management technique, aromatherapy is incredibly effective in helping you relax.
Massage oils are also effective in helping you relax. Applying scented massage oils gives you the opportunity to enjoy a comforting smell. The gentle stimulation of a massage also helps to melt away feelings of stress.
Many smells in today's world are actually a cause of stress, and may actually contribute to making you tense. Such smells include the smell of tar and smoke, which are usually a source of worry and anticipation.
In today's busy lifestyle, it may seem difficult and sometimes impossible to find time for yourself. The kids need dinner; the laundry needs to be done; the list goes on and on. Even if you are overwhelmed with responsibilities, lighting a scented candle in the living room, or baking some cookies will give the house a warm, inviting feeling. This may help relax your body and eventually lift your stress.
Another helpful aromatherapy technique that can help alleviate stress is to visit a food market where fresh food is sold. You don't have to buy anything, but by visiting this type of store, you can immerse yourself in the delectable smells of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as the smell of freshly baked goods.
If you are more discerning in your taste, and prefer only sweet smells, forgo the fresh produce market and opt for a local bakery. The scents in markets and bakeries are often reminiscent of old memories, which may actually bring you comfort and help you relax.
Perhaps your grandmother used to bake lemon meringue pie in her kitchen when you were young. If you smell lemon meringue in the bakery, you may be overcome with feelings of warmth and comfort. And you may begin to think of your grandmother.
If you find yourself in this type of situation, enjoy the experience and watch your stress begin to dissipate. Another great thing is that many foods are associated with warmth and happiness. Surrounding yourself with the smells of these foods can recreate these happy feelings and as a result can help you relax.
Aromatherapy can also help boost your mood. Smells have different effects. Some are sensual. Vanilla and chocolate, for example, are both aphrodisiacs. Studies have shown that chocolate is effective in heightening male arousal, while vanilla is generally preferred by females.
These smells, of course, can lead to feelings of pleasure and desire, which have a relaxing effect. They can even produce feelings of euphoria and elation, and are great stress relievers, as they serve two purposes.
First of all, they are pleasing to the nose, but they may aid in sexual desire. The neurotransmitter, dopamine, plays a huge role in sex, as does serotonin. Serotonin is critical to attraction, and actually helps reduce stress and aids in stress management.
So light some candles, and surround yourself with sweet scents. It's nice to know that stress relief could be only as far away as your pantry or spice rack!

Aquarium Therapy for Human Health
In addition to the joy, entertainment, and companionship many animals provide, it has been known for years, that animals can provide many health benefits to humans. Studies have shown that animals can increase longevity after heart attacks, lower cholesterol, and even predict seizures in people. Similarly, studies have found that watching fish in aquariums has many therapeutic effects, including: a notable and beneficial decrease in blood pressure, pulse rate, and muscle tension. In a study of patients awaiting dental surgery, it was found that aquarium watching was as effective as hypnosis, in reducing anxiety.
Purdue University researchers conducted an extensive study, which found that exposing Alzheimer's patients to tanks of brightly colored fish, may curtail disruptive behaviors and improve eating habits. Generally, it is difficult to keep these patients calm, attentive, or awake long enough for them to eat adequately, resulting in a need for costly nutritional supplements and medications. However, when aquariums were placed in the dining room of Alzheimer's facilities, it appeared that the stimulating combination of color, sound, and the varying, gliding movement of the fish held their attention for a relatively long time. They were more relaxed, attentive, and alert, and ate up to 21% more. As a result of eating more, the patients required less nutritional supplementation. There was also a noticeable decrease in physically aggressive behaviors among the patients. For some, even short-term memory may have been stimulated.
These are just a few examples, showing that in addition to both the educational and aesthetic benefits of aquariums, people who care for and watch fish, can reap health benefits as well.

Reducing stress, creating peace of mind and just easing all the tension throughout your body has so many positive affects on your life.
Meditation is one way to bring about a sense of calmness, quietness and peaceful relaxation. Meditation allows the mind to settle down and really experience an inner state of calmness. Completely immerse yourself in the picture as though you are really there experiencing the whole event involve all your senses, feel the wind, imagine how it smells, hear all the sounds allow yourself to be a part of the scenery. The practice of visualization is so powerful it can remove you from the stress of real life in a matter of moments. I visualize the perfect outcomes of many events in my life, the more you visualize something the easier it becomes for your sub-conscious mind to accept the visualization as reality.
Slow easy stretching is a wonderful exercise to use to bring you into a state of complete relaxation. When we become stressed our muscles tighten up and get sore leaving you uncomfortable and tense. Slowly stretching the muscles and tendons loosens you up in a couple of ways, first it stretches the muscles helping you to feel like your not all tied up in knots and just the act of stretching takes your mind off anything that may have been causing you stress. Stretching exercises can be done almost anywhere and while your stretching you can add to your relaxation by adding visualization as you perform your stretches. Now you have connected the body and the mind which helps to bring about a complete state of relaxation.
Muscle relaxation is a very effective technique that involves concentrating on one muscle group at a time. When using this technique you focus on tightening and then relaxing the muscle group. Using this method helps to take your mind off any worries you might have and it allows you to focus on the physical sensation of bringing your muscles to a state of relaxation. You should start tensing and relaxing your muscles in your toes then your feet and progressively work your way up through all the muscles in your body in a methodical pattern. You should tense your muscles for five to ten seconds and then relax for 30 seconds then repeat this process for every muscle group. You will find this exercise to be very relaxing and stress relieving as it frees your mind from the pressures of the day.
Bringing yourself to a state of total relaxation takes practice but the benefits you will receive such as stress relief make it all worthwhile. Whether you have a lot of stress in your life or a little and you believe you have it under control, you can always benefit from the many types of relaxation techniques. The use of soothing music such as the calming sounds of nature will only enhance the benefits you receive from using these forms of relaxation. Music therapy itself has the strong ability to bring you into a peaceful state of relaxation or to help you avoid stress altogether by playing it in the background while at work in the car or at home.

Stress response (also called the fight or flight response) is critical during emergency situations, such as when a driver has to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident. Stress vitiates Prana Vata, which governs the activity and energy of the brain. It can also be activated in a milder form at a time when the pressure's on but there's no actual danger - like stepping up to take the foul shot that could win the game, getting ready to go to a big dance, or sitting down for a final exam. Ayurveda, the ancient science of healing from India, considers one of its primary objectives to be preserving the continued good health of the healthy. It is provides a clear, concise, cohesive regimen to help people correct conditions such as stress response in a natural way. Vata dosha in general tends to get disturbed during travel. Drink Vata Tea or Worry Tea. These herbal teas are especially formulated to pacify Vata-related imbalances. Avoid carbonated or ice-cold beverages, because they disrupt digestion. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Ashwagandha nourishes the crucial mind-body connection and psychoneuro immune response (called PNI). It helps coordinate the mind and senses, as well, which is essential for good quality sleep. It is also a powerful Medhya Rasayana, which means that it enhances all three aspects of mind power (Dhi -- omprehension; Dhriti - memory; and Smriti -- recollection).

@ stress - The therapeutic effects of antidepressants are believed to be related to their effects on neurotransmitters. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) block the break-down of monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin and norepinephrine) by inhibiting the enzymes which oxidize them, thus leaving higher levels still active in the brain (synaptic cleft).
